Waterfalls in Northern Rensselaer County
We start our year with another of our popular waterfall tours. Join Russell Dunn, noted waterfall expert and author of three books on the waterfalls of Eastern New York, as we visit a number of waterfalls in Schaghticoke in northern Rensselaer County at a time when the flow should be most spectacular. Bring a lunch, as we will be out until early afternoon. Wear sturdy footwear, as some waterfalls require a short walk to view them.
Capacity is limited and so reservations are required. Call (518) 279-1963 or email nbconrad@msn.com to reserve a spot and get information on the meeting place. RLT leader is Nick Conrad.

Spring Wildflowers in Mattison Hollow
Mattison Hollow is a traditional access to the Taconic Crest Trail. In May, it is also home to a variety of spring woodland wildflowers. Possible sightings include Dutchman's breeches, trout lily, and rue anemone. We will start at DEC's Mattison Hollow trailhead in Cherry Plain for a 4 ½ to 5 mile hike. For 4 1/2 miles, the hiking is easy, with a stop at a waterfall for a snack or lunch. For the hardy, an optional additional ¼ mile up a very steep slope will bring you to the Taconic Crest Trail.
We recommend that you dress appropriately for all weather and trail conditions, and wear long pants and hiking boots or sturdy walking shoes. Bring adequate water and food.
This is a joint hike of the Taconic Hiking Club and the Rensselaer Land Trust.
Meet at Berlin High School parking lot on Route 22 in Berlin at 9 am to carpool to the trailhead. Berlin High School is south of the main commercial area of Berlin, and north of Stephentown. No reservations necessary. RLT leaders are Doree Cox (658-2643) and Nick Conrad (279-1963).
The remainder of the 2008 Outings will be announced shortly
